Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the latest installment of the Monsterverse, bringing more action and destruction to the franchise than ever before. The film follows Godzilla and King Kong, who reunite after their epic battle three years ago to take on a new threat in the form of the Scar King, a monstrous ape who commands an army of kaiju from the Hollow Earth.

Dr. Ilene Andrews Studied Kong For Years

Played by Rebecca Hall

Dr. Ilene Andrews, played by Rebecca Hall, returns after Godzilla vs. Kong, this time with more knowledge and experience about Titans than ever before. A linguist working for Monarch, Andrews spent years observing Kong, eventually helping him break back into the Hollow Earth and return home. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Ilene Andrews and her new allies, including her adoptive daughter Jia and new associate Trapper, are among those who partner with Godzilla and Kong to defeat the Scar King before he razes the surface world.

Hall is not a newcomer to the world of blockbusters, as she played a major antagonist in Iron Man 3 before the MonsterVerse: Maya Hansen, one of the film's antagonists. She's best known for movies like The Prestige and Vicky Cristina Barcelona but has recently been the face of interesting thrillers such as The Gift, The Night House, and Resurrection.

Bernie Hayes Is A Conspiracy Theorist

Played by Brian Tyree Henry

Brian Tyree Henry returns as Bernie Mack, having previously appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong. Bernie is a former employee of Apex, the technological company behind the construction of Mechagodzilla. However, Bernie betrayed Apex's secret plans, revealing them to the public on his conspiracy podcast, on which he is known simply as Anonymous.

Henry is best known for his role in the MCU's Eternals, where he plays Phastos, a pacifist inventor, and Atlanta, where he plays the main character, Alfred. He appears briefly as an Arkham clerk in Joker and voices Miles Morales' father in the Spider-Verse trilogy, a police officer named Jefferson Morales. More recently, the actor has starred in movies such as If Beale Street Could Talk, The Woman in the Windows, and Bullet Train.

Trapper Is A Titan Veterinarian

Played by Dan Stevens

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire features a brand-new character in the form of Trapper, who Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens portrays. Trapper is a veterinarian who specializes in Titan physiology, making him an important ally for the other human characters who want to see Kong and Godzilla succeed. He proves himself to be as well-versed in the origin and biology of Titans as Dr. Ilene Andrews.

2024 has been a great year for Stevens, who has appeared in some of the year's most exciting releases, including Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Sevens also had a role in 2024's third highest-grossing movie, Abigail — one of the best horror movies of the year — and Cuckoo, a mystery thriller starring Hunter Schafer.

Jia Is Kong's Best Friend

Played by Kaylee Hottle

Kaylee Hottle reprises her role as Jia in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Jia was a native of Iwi, an island ransacked by storms that took out everyone else in the young girl's village. The last survivor of the settlement, Jia came across Kong, who looked after her when no one else could. It was also from Jia, who is herself Deaf, that Kong learned sign language, allowing him to communicate with humans in a limited capacity.

During the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, Jia formed a close attachment with Titan researcher Dr. Ilene Andrews, who eventually adopted her as her daughter. In The New Empire, both Ilene and Jia return to support Kong as he faces even bigger threats than ever before. Hottle is a talented hearing-impaired actress: she's only 17 years old and has already starred in two explosive blockbusters, as well as an episode of Miami P.I.

King Kong Is Back and More Powerful Than Ever

Species: Simian Titan

The Monsteverse's version of King Kong returns in The New Empire, having claimed his rightful spot as the ruler of the Hollow Earth after his battle with Godzilla. However, he now finds his authority put in jeopardy by the rising might of the Scar King and his army, forcing Kong to look to old allies — and enemies — for help.

This time around, King Kong is Godzilla's ally, with the two massive kaiju teaming up to defeat the Scar King. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong attains a powerful gauntlet that increases his ferocity in battle — even if it may not be enough to defeat an enemy as strong as the Scar King. In addition, he reunites with the remaining tribe of his species in an undiscovered realm, the Hollow Earth.

Godzilla Is the King of the Monsters

Godzilla, the king of the monsters, returns once more in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Having established his place as the Earth's true Alpha Titan, Godzilla appears to have gone unchallenged since the events of Godzilla vs. Kong. However, he finds himself roped into the power struggle from within the Hollow Earth, as the Scar King rises with the intent to destroy the surface world.

The Monsterverse already boasts one of Godzilla's most powerful forms in cinema, but even this version of the character hasn't reached its full potential just yet. The New Empire presents yet another powerful Godzilla upgrade, absorbing cosmic radiation to unleash deadly blasts and power up his dorsal plates. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire doesn't disappoint when it comes to delivering Godzilla at his most powerful, making him the biggest threat to the Scar King's plans.

The Scar King Is the Monsterverse's Latest Villain

Although Godzilla vs. Kong made it seem as though all Simian Titans except Kong himself had died out, The New Empire proves that this isn't true. The film introduces the Scar King, who rules over a legion of monstrous apes residing in the Hollow Earth.

The Scar King is the Monsterverse's latest threat, with designs on using his massive army to overtake the human world and raze it to the ground. The new kaiju proves to be menacing enough to force Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful Titans known to man, to team up against him. Renowned stunt actor Allan Henry joins the cast of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as the man behind Kong and the Skar King.

Suko Is an Adorable New Titan

Species: Simian Titan

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduces several brand-new kaiju to the Monsterverse, but the cutest by far is Suko, a Simian Titan who teams up with the film's two titular monsters in the film. Also known as Baby Kong or Mini Kong, Suko defects from the Scar King's rule to help Godzilla and Kong win the day.

Suko, whose name means "essential child" in Japanese, may be much smaller than the other Titans in the film, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous. The miniature Kong boasts a sour attitude and scrappy fighting skills, making him an important ally to Kong.

From Hollow Earth's Leaders to Monarch Officials, These Characters Play Significant Roles in Gozilla x Kong

The Monarch HEAV pilot who appears in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's Hollow Earth exploration, Mikael, is played by Alex Ferns. The actor is best known for playing DS Nick Holness in the TV show The Devil's Hour and Sergeant Linus Mosk in Andor. On the big screen, he appeared in movies such as The Batman, Wrath of Man, and The Legend of Tarzan.

The Hollow Earth's mysterious spiritual monarch, Iwi Queen, is played by Fala Chen. The Chinese-American actress first rose to prominence in Hong Kong productions before appearing in English-language projects like the Irma Vep TV series, The Undoing, and the MCU's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The current director of Monarch, Hampton, is played by Rachel House in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The New Zealand actress is known for TV shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Creamerie, Foundation, and Heartbreak High. On the big screen, House has starred in movies such as Soul, Thor: Ragnarok, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Ron Smyck plays the role of Harris in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The actor made his breakthrough performance as Dave in Joseph Kosinski's Spiderhead, starring opposite Chris Hemsworth. He now plays Mario in the crime thriller series Troppo.

Performance Capture Brings the Film's Kaiju to Life

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire counts on a star-studded cast to capture the mix of awe and fear induced by the kaiju in the movie. However, a crucial aspect of the film is performance capture, an acting technique linked to the VFX department. Bringing giant monsters like Godzilla and King Kong to life in such a realistic fashion is no easy task, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire does that with the help of bodysuits and sensors that record an actor's facial expressions and movements to mirror their visual performance in the desired form.

Allan Henry brings King Kong and Skar King to life in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. With the help of prosthetic extensions and the recording of three-dimensional positions, the film's VFX team managed to capture with realism how massive creatures like Godzilla and King Kong would move and attack. This process is a major contrast to how filmmakers brought these awe-inspiring kaiju to life in the past century. The original King Kong from 1933 used a combination of mechanical puppets and tiny models to animate The Eighth Wonder of the World. Likewise, a real person in a practical monster suit played the first Godzilla in 1954. Back then, the kaiju either had mechanical movements or moved like a human. With today's VFX, it's almost as if these monsters are ready to crawl off the screen.
